Online Journals in pdf

Online journals very often require you to use Adobe Acrobat reader for the whole articles. (E.g Brain and Academic Press journals such as NeuroImage).

Articles which can only be read with this reader are called “pdf” files.

However even without Adobe Acrobat reader, you can usually read the abstracts of the papers.

Birkbeck CCS has a section on getting this software. It is usually available on the Psychology Department machines e.g. in room 534 and in College workstation rooms such as 536 or 402 (opposited 408).

If you access the journal Brain from non-Birkeck addresses you will need to give the username/password "birkbeck/andalus" in order to get to the whole article pdf files.

For other journals, consult the library about access from outside Birkbeck (for some you need to log on to the library site using your CCS username and password)

  Please keep these passwords confidential

The papers in some journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America can be read by Netscape 3.0 or higher without the Adobe software, as long as you choose the “Full Text” option instead of the “pdf” options.

The 1998 collection of brain-imaging papers in this journal is therefore readily available.

There is currently (14-10-98) free access to this colloquium collection of papers so you should not need a password either inside or outside Birkbeck. As of 15-10-01 there is direct access to all PNAS papers from Birkbeck or using BK dialup. From outside BK papers more than 4 weeks old are free online to everyone. However as of January 2002 the delay period for PNAS free access will be increased to 6 months.

An example from October 9th 2001 is "What" and "where" in the human auditory system. An example of the old free PNAS papers is —
