These are time lines for “Hominids” - species regarded as members of the human family tree. “H.” stands for “Homo” and “A.” stands for “Australopithecus” in all cases except Ardipithecus ramidus on the far left. The bottom section indicates behaviours of species in the middle: the 3 species of “robust” (i.e. heavily built) australopithecenes, at the top walked upright, but did not use stone tools or use fire.
Brain size was little bigger than in modern apes in the Australopithecenes, rather bigger in H. habilis, more than twice as big in H. erectus, 3 times the size in modern H. sapiens, and actually a little bigger than this in Neanderthals.
